Day 118 10th June 2012

Day 118 Sunday 10th June 2012.

Last night it didn’t stop raining “cats” and “dogs”.  I’ve become a bit “lazy” and not putting out the “fly” and thus the bedding got a bit wet.  Vania loaned me some “ear plugs” so that I could sleep. The noise of the rain on the canvas was extremely loud.

We packed up a wet caravan and headed towards Denham / Shark Bay. The free campsites we had picked out were still closed due to the bad weather that this part of WA has been getting lately.  There were other free campsites we could have gone to but these were too far out of Denham / Shark Bay to make them worthwhile. We bit the bullet and decided to go to Shark Bay Caravan Park. I managed to get a 10% seniors discount.

After we settled in we decided to see some of the coastal sights. We visited some of the “free campsites”. Some of these were absolutely fantastic. Flat, protected sights within 15 metres from the sea. Great. Fantastic views.  One of the great spots we went too was “Shell Beach”. The whole beach is covered with tiny beach shells. These are actually mined and used for pathways, drives around this area as well as sold to chicken farmers so that chickens would lay hard shelled eggs.

Tomorrow is an early start as we are heading in to watch the dolphins being feed at Monkey Mia. Although this is now become very commercial I am looking forward to seeing them as I have heard so much about this. The Francois Peron National Park was also closed today from the bad weather but we are hoping that it will reopen tomorrow so that we could take a 4 wheel drive into the Park.

The weather around here has certainly cleared up as it got to 25C with beautiful sunshine. Big contrast to this morning further down south. We will probably move on from this area on Tuesday towards Carnarvon.

Shell Beach. Tiny, tiny cockle shells stretching for "miles" and very "deep".

Me and my shadow. his is the only way I can get Vania's photo onto the blog.

Every cloud has a silver lining. In this case a "golden" lining

Just to show that we could do it with rocks as well.

Shell Beach. Goes for "miles". Amazing.

The section on the right of the fence is commercially mined.
