Day 117 9th June 2012

Day 117 Saturday 9th June 2012.

Surprise, surprise. Instead of rain as forecast we had clear night with a full moon. However, it may not have rained outside but due to the coldness outside and the hot air inside, too scared to say where that was coming from,  the caravan we had a lot of condensation. Condensation was so bad that I had drops falling in my face on several occasions. Oh well, suppose it’s just another of those “things” us brave grey nomads have to put up with. Ho hum!

It was drizzling in the morning and the barometer in the car was falling. Despite this we decided to secure our little caravan in the campsite and venture into Kalbarri to see the sights. There are several “Gorge” sights in the Kalbarri National Park but the dirt road accessing these was closed due to the rain.

After visiting a much friendlier Visitor Centre than in Geraldton, Vania and I decided to do the coastal walks. Despite that it was showering all day we had a fantastic time. It was great to do a bit of physical walking and feel the freshness of the wind, rain on our faces. We felt alive and our bodies was tingling all over.

Had a beautiful and filling chicken and sweet corn chowder soup at the Kalbarri pub as well as a fish burger and then went on 2 other Gorge walks that had bitumen road access. Vania and I are camped alongside the Murchison River approximately 70-80K’s away. Where we are camped the river is more like a little stream than a river. However, at the mouth of the Murchison in Kalbarri and through the gorges it is a very impressive river.

Despite the poor weather conditions we both had a great time and at times felt like little kids playing in the rain. Great to know that the inner child for both Vania and me is alive and well.

We are off towards Denham tomorrow. It should be very interesting as the 4 free council run campsites are currently closed due to the weather conditions. I rang up to book a site and was told to try tomorrow. Not to fussed as there are other “rest areas” where us experienced Grey Nomads can stay for 24 hours. We always manage to find some spot to stay the night and our little home is self-sufficient.
View from a walk in Kalbarri national park. Murchison river flows through the gorge.

Huge catch sfter I put a net in the Murchison River. Don't worry I put it back.

Vania loves to take "sneaky" photos when I am not looking.

Rugged coastline on the Kalbarri coastal drive.

Fantastic rock features along the coastline.

Down on the Murchison River.

Looking down onto the Murchison River near Kalbarri.

Rugged coastal views on the Kalbarri coastal walk / drive.

More rugged cliffs.

Ho hum, more.

There was a large swell which crashed onto the rocks. Very spectacular.

Looking into the quiet bay in Kalbarri.

Ghost gum at the start of one of the walks.
