Day 9 - 10 22nd February - 23rd February 2012

Day 9 - 22 February 2012

Packed up home today.  We are moving on to somewhere around the Grampians.  We stopped off at Hamilton to top up groceries and found a Catholic Church.  I have been searching for a Saint Christopher (Patriot Saint of Travel) since we started our trip and Oscar got us one for the car and one for my chain around my neck.   He also had them blessed by the priest.  That finally completes the total requirements for the trip.

We went to a camp site called Cherrypool.  What a disappointment.  Our first, disappointment that is, and I am sure there will be many.  However approx. 23 km SW from Cherrypool is another camping ground called Mountain Dam.  We travelled down the beaten track to this location and struck gold.  So three out of four is not bad at all.  Set up camp and went for a walk to familiarise ourselves with our new environment.  We are approximately 55 km’s north of Hamilton and 36km South of Horsham.

Oscar took a dip in the lake and I watched as I had sprained my ankle the day before on a walk.  Nobody laughed this time.  Oscar is way too serious.

Went out last night to look at the stars, wish I had a camera that could take pic’s of the night sky it is absolutely amazing.  Will try soon.

Day 10 23 February 2012

Well day started great but couldn’t wake lazy bones.  He was not in the mood to get out of bed early.  Good sign though, as it is a sign that he is finally de-stressing and relaxing.  Eventually got him out at 10:00am.  We decided that today was a camp day.  This life is really hard but somebody has to do it and Oscar and I have decided that it might as well be us.

Oscar decided to take me out to show me how to use my camera properly.  So I will share photo’s with you that I have managed to take with my new found talent.

I took a dip with Oscar in the lake today.  Not a total fan as the bottom is slimy but I none the less have to give it a go.  Had a barbeque for dinner with veggies, must have my veggies.  We have been using the generator much over the last two days as we have discovered that the Waeco has been progressively running  down the Auxiliary Battery and that it needed to be charged back up to full.  The inverter that we have been using to charge the computer and mobile phones had suddenly given up the ghost so we are now charging that through the generator connected to the van.

Have been using the longdrops for the last past week and I have got to say that if there is one thing I miss about home it has got to be the loo.  I keep wanting to flush and there is nothing to flush.  We are still free camping and the generator has pretty much paid for itself by now.

Day 6 - 8 19th February - 21st February 2012

Day 6 February 19 2012

Went into Warrnambool today to do "maintenance" shopping.  We are realising that whilst this is a holiday we are still learning about this type of lifestyle.  As we meet and speak to people, they give us some really good tips which we decide to make use of or not.  Today we decided that the advise given to us from Matt and Bunnie regarding the tap spanner, water jerry and the guy ropes for the awning are definitely something that we need to invest in.  The Tap Spanner, not sure if you have noticed but in certain areas the taps handle?? is removed to stop vandalism, by kids that would normally walk past a public tap and just turn it on for the hell of it and leave it running.  The council has removed the handles and the spanner enables you to open these taps.  We also bought a 20 litre water jerry as Bunnie advises that each time you go to an area where you are able to get some water good idea to fill up your jerry,  this way you can top up you water tanks when you are back at camp.  Guys ropes for the awning are to prevent us from loosing the front of the van in serious winds.  We have not had to learn these things the hard way, Thank God, and we are now prepared for this, where as if we had not had the conversation with others we may very well have had to learn this the hard way.

So as you can see there is also a serious side to this adventure.  A true learning curve for both Oscar and myself.

Avril phoned whilst we were out and invited us to dinner.  We went into Port Fairy and had a walk around the town and a drink at the local.  People are so friendly.  Back to camp for a shower and off to Avril and Paul's.  We met Mel and Joe friends of Avril and Paul's who are down from Melbourne for the week and staying with Avril and Paul.  Again what terrific People.  Spent a pleasant evening and what a spread.  Thanks Avril and Paul.

Slept over again and learnt something else I need to ensure that we always carry an overnight toiletry bag in the car, for these nights.

Day 7 20 February 2012

Had a good breakfast at Avril and Paul's,  the boys went for a drive into town and the girls went for a walk down to the water.  Sat on the rocks and just enjoyed the environment with nice people.

Packed a picnic lunch and headed off to Cape Bridgewater.  Unfortunately as is the case in Victoria the weather turned as we left town and there was not going to be a picnic at Cape Bridgewater but we still went to the cafe on the foreshore and enjoyed a Cappuccino, took a leisurely walk along the beach in the drizzle.

Left there and headed back to Portland to the lake just on the outskirts of town for a picnic undercover.  Barbeque provided under the Rotunda.  For all you Aussies I know that is normal for you guys but for those not in this wonderful country, it is just to let you know what a civilised country this is.  Had a wonderful picnic with Avril, Paul, Mel and Joe.
Came back to camp early with the intention of doing some blogging and work for Rocco.  Made a light Dinner and got into bed to watch a DVD and slept early.

Love and miss you all.

Day 3 - 5 16th February - 18th February 2012

Day 3 16/2/2012

Have decided to go out to Colac today and the Red Rock Lookout, which is a dormant volcano.  We arrived in Colac and decided I needed to get some of the Blog work done as well.  It is of no use having a Blog if you don’t update it.  Oscar rang his Mum and Marl called. We started off by going to the Botanic Gardens CafĂ© for a light lunch and I sat and wrote up the farewell and days 1 and 2.

After lunch we drove out to Red Rock which was pretty fascinating so far as you could see all the lakes in the surrounds.  Lake Corangamite is apparently 3 times as salty as the sea and is the largest salt lake in Australia at least.  Well you google it and let me know via comments.

It was here that Oscar glimpsed a Black Cockie with yellow feathers and he made me stop and discovered that there was a whole flock of them.  Trying to get a decent pic of them was not about to happen.  They are extremely elusive and flew off each time he got close enough to take a picture.

We then drove around the Beeac Lake and stopped to get some pics of this dry lake.  What an absolutely fascinating place.  We continued around to Beeac and Oscar impulsively suggested we stop at a pub for refreshments.  We headed in to a pub where two of the locals where perched on stools outside enjoying a beer and watching the passing traffic.  We went inside and Grant the owner was behind the bar and was very friendly and talkative.  He was over the moon that he had found a part locally with one of the old geysers in the town to repair his boiler which was 40 years old.  “All it took was one phone call” he kept saying as if it were a miracle.

One of the locals that and been outside on our arrival “Simon” came on in for a chat.  They told us if we stuck around long enough we would meet Fossil.  There was a swear jar in the Pub specifically for Fossil.  Didn’t let them know they may need another one for me.

After one drink we left and went to check out another free camping spot called Meredith Park.  It was alongside the banks of Lake Colac.  But I must be honest, whilst it had the lake it did not have the tranquillity of the forest camp we were currently enjoying.

Did a small grocery shop on the way out of town and decided to park off and to publish what I had written thus far.  It took forever to upload the farewell blog and after a lot of frustration decided to leave well alone and try over the next few days to update the rest.

Went home to Dando’s made dinner had a drink, there were quite a few new campers and it seemed the majority were all youngsters.  Later on in the evening as we were tucking in for a sleep the boys let off their first Molotov cocktail and I nearly had a heart attack.   Strange how that took me back to  a time back in Durban when I was lying in the bath and my head was under the water as I was washing my hair and I heard this enormous explosion and it was a bomb that went off at the city hall in Durban.  I was approximately 21 years of age.

RIP Rob.

Signing out

Hey Jakes this one is for you they are real.  They do exist but I guess you will have to do a trip like this to find them. We managed to see 7 on day 2 and many more over the next few nights sitting in the camp site around dusk.

Industriously trying to keep you up to date.

Day 4 17 February 2012
Packed up at Dando’s today we were moving out to the next location wherever that may be.  “Go West Young Man Go West”.  Decision made we are going to head towards Portland and stopping off at a Free Campsite Called Sawpit Camping Grounds in Mount Clay which is about 10km east of Portland just outside of the town Narrawong.
Our trip to this destination takes us past the 12 Apostles.  We obviously must stop here and go for a walk to get some pics and just to enjoy this absolutely beautiful place.  It amazes me that each time I have been here I enjoy it as though it is the first time I have been here.
We head off to Warrnambool where there is a Public Dumping Site. We are about to experience our first toilet cleaning exercise.  Must admit thought it would be a lot worse, it was not that bad.  We fill our water tanks at the same venue.  We ran out of water in the one tank early that morning, so we know we are using way too much water (90 litres in 3 days) and have to start using water more efficiently.  But these are the things we will learn along the way, at least we are learning whilst we are still in an area where we can find place to top up.
Arrived at camp approx 4:30pm. Set up the van, and I must admit this is working out pretty damn good. We have a system which takes us approx. half hour and no stress. We are heading into Portland for a shop and dinner. We had a Chinese dinner and after dinner Oscar wanted to go and see if he could find Avril’s house. We drove along the foreshore and taa….daa…. there it was. We spent a lovely evening chatting to Avril and Paul. Had a few to drinks and stayed the night.

Day 5 18th February 2012
I woke early this morning.  Oscar shared the same room as I did and for the first time I realised he snores, and oh my word does he snore.  Surprised he didn’t saw down the entire house.  I took a walk along the shore of Portland trying to find a way down to the water but without much luck.  Got back to the house and woke Oscar.  We showered and left a note for our hosts and left to head back to the camp. Arrived home and decided today would be chill day and blog day.
I got down to the task of writing up all the blogs that I was behind whilst Oscar tried to read “Practicing the Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle.  He kept falling asleep and I kept interrupting him with questions with which to update the blog.  At some point I thought he looked rather irritated.
I managed to upload Days 1 and 2 but must say it takes forever to upload the photos, so I am restricting the number of photos that I upload going forward.  At three we decided we needed to take a walk.  We are determined to keep healthy by doing a fair amount of exercise daily and eating healthy (yes Marl I am eating healthy).
We walked towards Whale Lookout which overlooks the Southern Ocean and the history surrounding this, is that the aboriginal tribe that was in this region used to look out for whales that had beached from this location and send up smoke signals alerting all other members of the tribe to this fact.  They would then journey down to the beach and farm the whale meat and any other part of the whale that they could use.  They would then use this to barter with other tribes in the region.
We journey on further down the beaten track and as we round a corner I whistled and said OMG you do not seriously expect me to climb up that.  THAT, was a 65 degree incline of the road for approximate 70 meters as far as we could see up before it turned a corner, for all I knew this could have continued up for another few kilometres considering we were on Mount Clay.
I looked over at Oscars face just in time to see the dogged determination he had to make this wide backside get to the summit of whatever THAT was.  Off he went and the next moment his feet slipped out from under him, in this mound of fine powder (bull) dust and he was planted firmly on his backside. The look of horror on his face!!! I rushed on over screaming with laughter and there my feet went and I joined him with my backside in the dust.  Well needless to say I sat there and cried I was laughing so hard.  Eventually Oscar couldn’t help himself he had to join me in laughter. There we sat these 50+ and 60+ year olds laughing, tears rolling down our cheeks, filthy as can be. Forgotten was the fact that his camera was covered in this very fine powdery dust.  I wish there had been a third party there this was definitely a youtube video.  Needless to say we did not climb "THAT".  We eventually got up tears of laughter streaking our cheeks and headed back to camp.  We cleaned ourselves and the camera up.
We had our first BBQ tonight and went over to spend the evening with Ken and Matt who are "Family" and Bunnie a lady of 57 who has a bus and has been doing the Australian circuit for the last 2 years.
We are finding that it is the nice people that we are meeting along the way plus what ever Australia has to offer, that is making this trip all it is meant to be.  It is restoring my faith that there are really nice decent people on this earth and that the saying "a stranger is only a friend you have not met" is very true.
Well till we sign on again Keep well, happy, safe and healthy.
Oh and thanks Robbie, you are a lifesaver uploading now has become less of a burden.  I have saved at least 12 hours today alone.

Day 1 - 2 14th February - 15th February 2012

Day 1 14th February

Have Houdini settled in nicely, have posted letter to parents.  Got the first picture of Houdini and his new mates, O & V.  Been to the real estate agent to ensure no loose strings, all set and ready to take off.  Lou has come to see us off and the boys Clinton and Mike are there too.
We head off south to Sorrento to catch the ferry across to Queenscliff.  At this point I would like to thank all of you for your messages.  We have received them but as you can imagine too much on our minds right at this point to be able to respond to them.  We will text each of you when we are more settled.  We hop on board the Ferry Heading west.  “Go West Young Man Go west.”

Johnnie these photos are for you.  And the people that work on steam trains are lovely people.  Very friendly and extremely accommodating.

After leaving Queenscliff we headed off for the Great Ocean Road. Marl I am glad you did not speak to Oscar about my fears.  I decided to put my trust in him that I would not be a nervous wreck by the time we reached our destination and I survived.  I only lost faith once on the road when the bus came around the corner and I thought he was too close for comfort.

Stopped off in Anglesea for lunch and headed on to Dando’s Camping Ground, which runs alongside the Gellibrand River, in the Otway Rangers, approximately 26 km’s south of Colac.

We were doing our first stint of camping as free campers.  For those not in Oz it is camping in a park that does not have normal camping ground facilities, such as shower facilities.  It does have toilets and barbeque (braai) facilities.  We arrived at Dando’s about 4:30pm and set up home, had a champers or two or three then made dinner, roast chicken and salad. (Must admit did not cook the chicken myself bought this in Anglesea).  We settled in for our first night.  Oscar took me to look at the stars but we did not find the Southern Cross that first night or any night there after, I guess we have been looking in the wrong places.

Day 2 15th February
Rise and shine early leave the camp site at 10am off to the Otway Fly Treetop Adventure.  Adventure????????????????  More like a nervous apperplexy.  Again had to have a lot of faith and trust in Oscar.  I kid you not it was bloody high up and at one point in time I felt as sick as a dog but did continue up. Absolutely beautiful rain forests.  By the way Oscar in all his wisdom decided I needed exercise in the morning for half hour walk, little did he realise he would have me walking approximately 4 hours and in some places intense walking upstairs and downstairs, reminded him of doing the 1000 stairs.

The walkway was 25 metres above ground and the tower was  47 metres.  Can you blame me for feeling ill?

After Leaving the Otway Fly we headed further south to the Triplet Falls

Johnnie we found a steam train for you to restore.  Here are the pic’s I can give you the co-ords but can’t help for the next year to get her out.  Good luck with that and let us know how it goes.
Chasey Ouma found all the dinosaurs in Australia.

Stopped off at Ferguson Museum, had a cuppa and headed home for the night – home being Dando’s Camping ground.  Oscar took a dip in the Gellibrand River which was icy cold.  Settled in for the night with more Champers and Dinner.
Will continue this journey possibly tomorrow.  We will load up everytime we can get into an area where we get signal for the technology required to do this blog.  Mobile Technology is very slow and very frustrating so will probably in the future publish once a week with fewer pictures.
Until the next time keep safe, healthy and happy.
